Enzymes are not, of course, the sole cause of all disease. However, they are responsible for all cellular activity, and for the break-down and elimination of waste and toxic substances.
Enzymes are essential to our immune system, which relies almost entirely on enzymes to do its job. The significance of enzymes is obvious when you consider that the immune system is singularly responsible for fighting off all foreign invaders in the body, such as bacteria, viruses, tumours, and harmful chemicals. Research has shown that a weak immune system has far fewer enzymes than a strong one.
The key players in our immune system are the white blood cells, or leukocytes, which act as our internal "swat team". They are responsible for destroying all the foreign, disease-producing substances in the blood and in the lymph fluid throughout the body.
Leukocytes are primarily made up of enzymes, containing 8 different amylase enzymes alone, as well as proteolytic and lipolytic enzymes. Plus, the action of leukocytes is enzymatic in nature: breaking down foreign substances and reducing them to a form that the body can dispose of, in much the same way that digestive enzymes break down food into particles that the body can utilise.
The contrast between replenishing your body's supply of enzyme (by eating raw foods, or taking enzyme supplements) and the depleting enzymes in our diets is easily measured.
NO Enzymes in Diet:
• "Borrows" enzymes from endogenous supply to aid digestion
• Body's enzyme stores become depleted.
• Immune system is weakened, and we become more susceptible to disease
Enzymes in Diet (raw food or supplements):
• Helps to digest food
• Allow proper absorption of all essential nutrients
• Replenish endogenous enzyme supply
• Keeps the immune system strong, and the risk of disease low.
If the immune system is largely made up of, and dependent upon, enzymes for its strength and efficiency, it will be severely weakened by a reduction in the number of enzymes.
