    Cellulite is a combination of fat globules, waste matter, and water,
    imprisoned in connective tissue. Cellulite is a term coined in European salons
    and spas to describe deposits of unattractive dimpled skin or dimpled fat
    found on the thighs and buttocks and other body areas, where large areas
    of fat are found in close proximity to the skin.



    Women are more affected by cellulite formation than men,
    especially on the thighs. Cellulite formations start in puberty in women,
    as hormones change. Most women over age 18 have some degree of cellulite.



    In men, loose fat on the chest (pectoral) area and the thighs
    can resemble cellulite. A person does not have to be overweight to develop this
    dimpled skin called cellulite; and cellulite is not always reduced by weight loss.



    The scientific theory of cellulite is that the skin's underlying supports
    called fibrous septae do not hold the skin together evenly and this
    uneven support causes the irregular bulging and dimples. String-like tissues
    that pull it inward, toward the interior of the body, tether the skin down.
    The tension of these strings pulls sections of fat in along with them.
    Cellulite has been compared to the dimples in a mattress
    that are caused by the strings that hold the “tucks” down.



    Regular vigorous exercise is the best defense against the formation of cellulite.
    Massage can be effective if performed very vigorously.
    However, this technique may leave bruising until the person's body adapts
    to the massage. Ten to twenty sessions are needed to see results.
    Ultrasonic cellulite treatments are often combined with massage and brushing
    of the skin. The treatment requires 20 to 40 sessions, but is effective.





     Liposuction can remove cellulite fat and the strings of tissue that pull the fat
     down by scraping under the surface of the skin to disconnect them from
     the fat. This works best in younger persons. However, in older persons
     liposuction may cause more dimpling of the skin.



    Liponic Sculpturing is becoming very popular and uses machines
    with various types of rollers and vibrators. One new cellulite treatment
    that was developed in France is referred to as liponic sculpturing.
    This is a non-surgical technique that does not break the skin like liposuction.
    The procedure involves the use of a computer-controlled machine
    that moves over the skin to produce a rolling and sucking motion.
    This gradually improves the skin texture, improves
    the skin's appearance and removes the dimples.



    Recently, researchers used ultrasonography, microscopic examinations,
    and fat-metabolism studies to see how affected and unaffected skin
    areas differed in seven healthy adult subjects (five women, two men;
    four affected, three unaffected). The researchers concluded: (a) certain
    characteristics of skin make women more prone than men to develop cellulite,
    (b) the process is diffuse rather than localized, and (c) there are
    no significant differences in the appearance or function of the fatty tissue
    or the regional blood flow between affected and unaffected sites
    within individuals.



    Cellulite is the accumulation of fat cells which have become trapped
    in the collagen and elastin fibres. The resulting lumpy "orange peel" effect
    is unattractive. The average woman has more subcutaneous fat cells
    than the average man.



    These fat cells are most commonly located in the lower part of the body,
    and it is believed that female hormones are the main cause.
    Other factors which may contribute to the formation of cellulite
    include too many rich foods, excess of tobacco and alcohol,
    and poor blood circulation. It may also be hereditary.

      Whatever the actual cause in individual sufferers, the result is that fat cells are effectively trapped,
      and locked up in the collagen and elastin fibres. The local circulation is often slowed and the nerve endings
      may become compressed and tender. Cellulite is in essence imprisoned fat, and cannot be eliminated by diet
      and exercise alone. It can be treated in a variety of ways, with varying success.


      Hormones are most likely responsible for the formation of cellulite. Hormonal factors would explain
      why cellulite often appears in women during periods of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy,
      menopause, premenstrual syndrome and during the initial months on birth control pills.
      It is not really clear why some people get it and others don't. There is little one can do to prevent
      or get rid of cellulite. However, people who stay in good shape or who have less total body fat
      seem to have fewer problems with cellulite.


      Cellulite creams, which marketers claim will dissolve the fat and smooth the skin are not a permanent solution.       Cellulite creams are somewhat effective, but only if they are used on a regular basis.
      Any reduction in appearance of cellulite achieved using creams usually disappears upon cessation of use.
      But by far, the most practical, safest and long lasting way to reduce cellulite is by combining a low-fat diet
      with an appropriate exercise program that tones the underlying muscle.
      Therefore, an aerobic only exercise program aimed at burning fat is not enough.


      Strength training is an important element in reducing the unsightly appearance of cellulite since it increases
      muscle tone and decreases total body fat. The way you strength train is even more important.
      A program that targets fat loss in the lower body, specifically hips, thighs, abdomen
      and buttocks is ideal for most women.


      Circuit training is a great way to train with these goals in mind. The very nature of circuit training
      fatigues the muscle groups helping to promote a reduction in actual size of the area, while decreasing
      the percentage of body fat. The routines for women with these goals in mind may involve a 20 repetition
      concept which also keeps the heart rate up. It is also recommended that when training for shape, not size,
      the exercises are performed with no rest between sets, only for a drink of water.


      This type of training will create more fat-burning muscle while still giving you a longer,
      leaner and shapely, not bulky body.
